It's not a proxy war. Not everything happening in the world flows through the lens of American exceptionalism.

The Ukrainians are fighting for their lives against an invading force. The US is providing arms and intelligence to aid them. If we can't stand up against oppression and a tyrannical regime bent on the destruction of not just Ukraine but European civilisation as we know it, because of cynicism, then we're in big trouble.
